What Does SP * Mean on a Credit Card Statement?

SP * is how purchases from Shopify-powered stores appear. Shopify's help pages say charges from other Shopify stores show as SP * STORE NAME. Shopify itself sold you nothing — the store after the prefix did.

Many brands you know only from social media ads run on Shopify, which is why SP * charges are often from a store whose name you only half remember. Shopify's own bills to store owners read SHOPIFY * followed by a bill number.

How to read a SP * charge

Don't recognize a SP * charge? Do this

  1. Search your email for the store name after SP * — the order confirmation came from that store.
  2. Check social-media and influencer purchases; many run on Shopify.
  3. Contact the store for a refund. Shopify cannot look up orders for shoppers.
