What Does IC* Mean on a Card Statement?

IC* is the prefix Instacart uses on card statements, covering grocery orders, Instacart+ memberships and the authorization holds placed while an order is being shopped.

Instacart charges differ from most retail charges in one important way: the amount is not known at checkout. Your shopper may substitute an item, a weighed item may come in heavier or lighter than estimated, and the tip can be adjusted after delivery. Instacart therefore places a hold slightly above the estimated total and charges the real amount once the order is complete.

How to read a IC* charge

Don't recognize a IC* charge? Do this

  1. Open Instacart › Your Orders and match the delivery date rather than the amount — the amount is the part that moves.
  2. Compare the charge with the receipt total, not the checkout estimate. Instacart shows both, and the difference is usually replacements or weighed items.
  3. A charge with no matching order is likely Instacart+ renewing: check Account › Instacart+ for the renewal date, and cancel there if you no longer want it.
  4. For a wrong or missing item, use Report a problem on the order — Instacart refunds directly and faster than a bank dispute.
  5. Holds that never settle drop off in a few business days. If a hold and the matching final charge are both still showing after a week, raise it with your bank.

Common questions

Why was I charged more than my Instacart order total?

The amount held at checkout is an estimate. Replacements, weighed items and tip adjustments change the real total, which is charged once the order is delivered. Compare against the final receipt, not the checkout screen.

Why are there two IC* charges for one order?

One is the authorization hold placed while the order was being shopped, and one is the settled amount. The hold is released automatically, usually within a few business days.

What is an IC* charge with no matching grocery order?

Most often the Instacart+ membership renewing. Account › Instacart+ shows the renewal date and lets you cancel it.

How do I get an Instacart refund?

Use Report a problem on the order in the app. Instacart handles missing, damaged and wrong items directly, and that is both faster and more likely to succeed than a chargeback.
